AVG/Grisoft going into the ?toolbar? game? Answer - Yes!

You know, this is getting tiresom. These last few months we’ve seen several respectable security programs and some non-respectable take the route into including toolbars with their products. We’ve seen Lavasoft in discussions with Ask.com, Webroot’s SpySweeper including a toolbar and then ZoneLabs doing the same aswell (although some are not the full toolbar, but [...]

Despite the fact that it is suposed to be easy to uninstall, as soon as/if it appears on my machine, and as a matter of principle, AVG 7.5 comes off.
Ohh, yes....AVG Anti-spyware too.

Once again we see a popular security application taking advantage of the end user.

  • Taking advantage because the option to install the toolbar is already checked by default.
  • There are currently no details on how to uninstall the toolbar.
  • The inclusion of Yahoo search is not made clear.
At the time of this post, the toolbar details regarding Yahoo search are..

The AVG Security Toolbar provides you with easy access to manage your AVG Search-Shield and AVG Active Surf-Shield protections without having to open the AVG control center. The AVG Security Toolbar also allows a direct search through Yahoo! where the LinkScanner™ technology will flag any dangerous or questionable sites, safe sites will show on Yahoo! as usual.

I also read that it gets installed even if this option is anticked.

I was reading that in F/F it appears as an add on. It can then be uninstalled, like a normal add on.

Installed version 8 - two issues with it.

1. Can't so far connect to server for updates - "connection failed" (Firewall set to Allow)
2. Had to disable Resident Shield component as it was taking up processing time & slowing everything down.

Still can't connect
Seems lIke Resident Shield does a complete scan at every startup & so far can't disable.

Looks like an uninstall & back to Version 7.5 !

Successful update, at last ! But main issue still remains !

Stewart,

I have just managed to install AVG8, and have not experienced any problems.
Basil has started a thread about AVG8 and his problem areas were with the initial scan which appears to pick up false positives.

Couldn't resist the temptation & installed AVG 8 on my XP Media Centre PC following exactly the same procedure as on my other XP PC i.e.letting AVG 8 uninstall V7 & with same d/l.

Surprise ! Surprise ! Everything is running hunky-dory ! Resident Shield not taking up processing time & updated first time.

With other PC, had to d/l updates & manually install.

Version 8.0 will overwrite AVG antivirus version 7.5...so, you do not need to uninstall 7.5 first.

AVG Anti-Virus and Internet Security - Upgrade Center

or

AVG Anti-Virus and Internet Security - Gain AVG 8.0 compatible licence number

These are the links I used sylviewrig. I downloaded AVG 8.0 antivirus (despite its name it includes antispyware). I have got the paid version.

The full previous discussion can be found at the "Other Security-Spyware, Adware, Malware etc." forum under the "AVG 7.5" thread.
