Stop: 0x00000050 and stop: 0x0000008e

Hello, i hope someone can give me some advice or pointers please?
I installed Win XP Pro on a my pc, unbranded, 500k Ram, VIA chipset, Matrox graphics, and all was well for months....

.. Until it started to get BSOD with Stop errors, 0x00000050 or 0x0000008e every day.

It seemed to be the graphics card, so i swapped it for a Win XP 'approved' one, and the problem semed to go away , for a day...

Now it is back..... Is it a Win XP update that has caused it....?

At the BSOD there is no indication of what is causing the error...

I have run Win Memory diag for 24 hours on the box, and it reports no errors!

does anyone know how i can track this error down..?

many thanks in advance ...

Do you have sp1 or sp2 installed. I believe there were issues like this with sp1.

penny11:

If you go to Start->Control Panel->System, it will say on this window under System.

Stop error 0x00000050 can be caused be quite a few things, amongst other things, defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems.

Stop error 0x0000008e, these are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).

Did you make any changes to your computer (software or hardware), just before you started getting BSODs?

Hopefully it is sp2, however one way of checking is to right click the 'MY Computer' icon select properties and on the 'General' tab you will see details of the system/ registered owner/version and if it is sp1 or sp2.
regards.

penny11, 'alister' has shown you another way to establish if you have SP2. Typical windows always more than one way of doing things

Re: Stop: 0x00000050 and stop: 0x0000008e

well thanks to all above for the pointer ...
I DO have SP2, and today when i got BSOD i also a got a message, NAVENG.SYS is being blamed for a 0x50 error.... this seems to belong to Symantec (Norton AV), so why is it causing my PC to stop? I have uploaded the current av stuff and noticed that there is a 'problem' with NAVENG.sys on Symantecs pages, but they say that if i install latest av , then it should be OK?

am i being naive...?

thanks again.....

penny11:

What version of Nortons are you using?

It would be worth installing the fix supplied by Symantec, I think this would be done by simply running your Antivirus "LiveUpdate", or if it is a simple download, simply download it and install it.

Could you give me a link to the fix, please, and I will have a look at it for you.
